Prayer

When we went to our Foster Care Orientation, the trainer told us that we were not allowed to talk about prayer. She said that they couldn't stop us from praying but they absolutely did not want to hear about it and they wouldn't tolerate talk about it. It was made clear that the agency had no religious affiliations (though I believe it was started by a Jewish group?).

Yesterday I spoke to the same trainer on the phone. After not hearing back from our agency for 2 weeks (with multiple calls, e-mails, etc. - everyone I complain to says "welcome to the system"), I was extremely frustrated and depressed. Monday was a very bad day for me and Tuesday was not much better. So when I finally got the trainer on the phone, I was thrilled. Until she told me that the answer to the question that I had a week ago was a yes and we could have done our training a whole two weeks earlier. TWO WEEKS! I was so sad and annoyed that the only way to comfort myself was to blurt out "well, it's all in the Lord's timing right!?"

Surprisingly the trainer said, "I'm so glad that is your attitude and response! I am a believer and as bad as I feel for not getting back to you in time, I believe His plan is best." I was so thrilled (and shocked) to hear those words. I thought for sure she would be angry and annoyed that I had said that but instead her response filled me with joy and gave me the hope to keep moving ahead...even if it does take longer than I personally think it should.

In the grand scheme of things, what is two weeks anyway right!? By the time, I ended the conversation with her I had great hope again and was crying. I really believe she thinks I am nuts because I was so emotional but oh well. This is such an emotional process.

"If you are adopting because you think you are going to save a child, think again. However, if you are adopting because you want to stretch the boundaries of your love, you have a credible start. Adoption is not for the faint at heart." - quiskaeya.com

We are scheduled for training on July 10th and July 24th. I got the impression that after that, the trainer was going to do everything she could to speed up the process on the their end and help us along. I'm not holding my breath (remember, "welcome to the system") but I'm praying hard!

And just maybe the trainer is praying too!

But we won't talk about that. :)

A First For Us

I just dropped HomeAudio off at the movies.

I'm not sure how I feel about this.

Here are the facts~

~He is almost 11.
~He is a firstborn, anxious kid who is very responsible and wise.
~It is a 10:00am movie.
~It is a kid's movie full of mothers and kids.
~He is with his 16 year old cousin.

But despite all of that, it's just weird to pull up and drop him off.

A first for us.

Creatures

~We've had 2 weeks of summer and the kids have pretty much ruined almost all of my tupperware. Frogs, minnows, worms, lightning bugs, catepillars, ants, butterflies, and other disgusting creatures have been captured. I'm not really happy about it.

~Today has been a hard day. Management is out of town. My neighbor friends are out of town. H&G is not here anymore. It's depressing. And quiet.

~There have been quite a few deaths in the last few weeks. Such sadness! I need to call my good friend Rekiya. The pastor from our previous church passed away and I know he was like a father to her. Such loss!

~It's really hitting me this summer just how big HomeAudio is getting. He is starting to act more and more like a pre-teen everyday. Of course, he is still my snuggler (WeeklyAd has never been a snuggler) and has a tender heart but his actions and looks are changing right before my eyes.

~God is so good! Waiting is so hard!

Weekend

Thank you all so much for your prayers and kind words! The weekend was wonderful and exhausting and so much more. We really had the best time with H&G and found that she truly does fit right in with our family!

The kids could not have loved on her more. Literally! They could not leave the sweet baby alone. Between hugs and kisses and being carried around the house, H&G got to know HomeAudio and WeeklyAd quite well. They adore her and are so proud of her! I think they told every friend and stranger around that we were trying to adopt her so she could be their sister. They were very sweet with her and were great helpers!

Operation Attachment worked quite well Friday and Saturday. I was the one who fed her and changed her and comforted her when needed. We definitely bonded. It was heavenly! And then came Sunday...I still was the one to change her and feed her and comfort her...she wouldn't go to anyone else. She just wanted me and to be honest with you, I loved it. I loved that she cried for me and was comforted when I held her and that she looked for me when she was playing on the rug with toys. I felt like her mom and I felt like she needed me. And I'm pretty sure that it all was a good thing. I'm still reading some books and have a lot to work through and pray about but we had a good start to what I hope is a long, loving relationship.

Now, after the weekend~

~I feel excited about the possibility even more.
~I feel sad that I had to take her back.
~I feel like a piece of our puzzle is gone and I already miss her.
~I appreciate my kids so much more for how they have stepped up and embraced what God might have for us.
~I'm so thankful for my extended family and their patience and joy in celebrating with us.
~I feel more love for my husband as I watch him love and comfort the baby and look at her with daddy eyes.
~I love where we live. We had a neighborhood ice cream social Friday night and it was so great to see such diversity in race and age around us.
~I value our community and feel support from those around us.
~I feel motivated to work harder and pray longer.
~I'm ready to sleep in!

~I'm counting the days until Friday when I can see her and hold her and smell her again!

Bullet Points

Sorry....another bullet point post today.

~ The kids have been so exhausted from Vacation Bible School. They must play hard cuz they crash in the afternoons.

~ Baseball is over now. I will miss sitting out on a nice summer evening, watching the game, and chatting with friends. I will not miss rushing to eat dinner at 4:30 and hiking equipment across the muddy fields.

~ It's hard to believe we will finally have some free evenings.

~ We found out yesterday that we are most likely going to have H&G in our home for the whole weekend!! We are very excited! We are, however, still trying to guard our hearts a bit as next week some pretty crucial decisions are expected to be made and it is all still in the Lord's hands.

~ Speaking of guarding hearts, any Bachelorette watchers out there? What did you think about the "guarding heart tattoo?" yikes!

~ Didn't feel the earthquake today. We were home at that time and Management felt it while sitting in his chair. The kids and I did not. Did you?

Deja Vu

Both Management and I have commented on how very similar this adoption process is to the birth of HomeAudio and WeeklyAd. It's so strange really to live through the similarities and experience some of the same emotions. Having HomeAudio in the hospital for 9 weeks and WeeklyAd in the hospital for 5 weeks, there are definitely things that are the same. H&G* is not in the hospital but crazy enough, her agency is just around the corner from the hospital where H and W were born!

Assuming all goes well and we do bring H&G into our family -

~ all 3 of our children were preemies.
~ we had/have to drive n.u.m.e.r.o.u.s. times to a location 40 miles away to visit our babies.
~ going to visit our babies is top priority though it takes a lot of gas expense.
~ we depend on my parents a lot (thanks mom and dad) to babysit while we drive said distance and attend meetings or visits. When HomeAudio was born we didn't have to worry about sitters and time constraints with other kids at home. When WeeklyAd was born, the most stressful part of her hospitalization was the sitter situation. This is somewhere in the middle of those two.
~ we never knew exactly when or even IF our babies would be coming home.
~ we have to walk a fine line between preparing for baby to come home and not jumping the gun.
~ our hearts soar when we are with the babies and ache when we are home without them.
~ the absent baby is always on our minds.
~ and probably one of the hardest...feeling like we are missing out on their lives as they grow and develop outside of our home. It's bittersweet as we desire the babies to grow and develop but we also want time to stand still until the babies are home and able to grow and develop in our presence. It's so hard to explain this to people.

The cost is high but the results are eternally worth it. We pray that the similarities don't end in the circumstances but continue into the outcome as well! We rejoiced the days that we brought our babies home and we look forward to rejoicing again!

*Management would like the baby's name to be Home & Garden on my blog for a significant reason. We have 5 seats at our kitchen table and 5 seats at our patio table. That 5th chair is what the Lord used to speak to Management about adoption. It's not the name that I would have chosen but I guess it's better than Patio or Chair. :)

Surprise

My heart is bursting with excitement and yet very guarded. After 2 years of the Lord telling us to wait, He is now telling us to move forward. It's exciting and scary and sad and joyful and just about every other emotion I can think of.

We are trying to adopt again.

It's amazing to us that just 12 days ago we had no idea that we would be thrown back into the process of adoption orientations, gathering endless forms and papers, and riding this emotional roller coaster. We were spending our weekend watching our new favorite show Pawn Stars (we are hopelessly addicted) and minding our own business. Management was on Facebook and then a message popped up. It was from a foster mother introducing us to a sweet little chubby cheeked 7 month old girl and asking if we were still thinking about adopting.

We prayed about it, dreamed about it, shared the news with some family and our small group, and then let the foster mom know that yes, we were still very much interested in adopting. She immediately e-mailed some forms for us to fill out and invited us to meet the baby the very next day.

oh.my.goodness.

As much as we tried, our hearts could not stop from instantly loving this baby girl! She is absolutely beautiful! And such a good, sweet natured baby girl. She reminds me very much of HomeAudio as a baby. She is very inquisitive and intensely stares at people and objects. She is an observer. Very smart!

Since that day we have been able to spend quite a bit of time with her. Her foster parents have been more than gracious in helping us get to know her and her get to know us. We cherish our time with her! We have also, since that day, been to 2 different orientations, filled out paperwork, been to the police station, sent countless e-mails and phone calls, and I have worked myself into a tizzy!

Many many many times I have had to tell myself to get a grip! This is crazy! But this situation is a little unique and we had to seek approval from the foster parents (obviously that was done already), the social worker, the adoption department, and the foster care department. What a nerve wracking couple of days as we waited for each response. I was just a big ball of anxiety.

But at this point, we have approval from every one of them. Basically, approval means that we can move forward with the intention of fostering and adopting this baby and they are willing to match her with us. We have a looong process ahead of us but we are willing to fight for this little girl and pray that she will be permanent member of our family! We are very cautiously optimistic and though we remain somewhat guarded, we are getting more and more confident and excited with each passing day.

Please pray with us as continue this process in faith. I know I keep saying this but it is so emotional. Fostering is so different from adopting and the orientation was just heartbreaking! Well, this is long enough! Thanks again for your love, support, and prayers! We are so excited about the possibilities and are comforted by the ways that we see God at work in and through this!

Thanks friends!

Zebras and Country Music

Ugh! I failed my own challenge and did not succeed in blogging every day last week. I tried, but I failed. Oh well. Life goes on.

I've been a big ball of emotions this past week. There are a lot of things up in the air for us, a lot of things happening with our friends, and many many things to be praying about. I think I've prayed more in the last week than I have all year which is very sad and yet very good I guess.

School is finished!! Hooray! We spent the first day of summer vacation at the zoo today and it was more educational than I ever wanted it to be. Let's just say that the zebra's mating led to a lightbulb moment for HomeAudio. It makes me sad but I guess that is part of life and letting them grow up. sigh.

I went to my first ever country music concert to see Brad Paisley. There were four of us ladies there and I had a great time!!! Sadly I only know one Brad Paisley song but the concert was fantastic and we had a great Girls Night Out! And yes, I would listen to country again. :)

We've been watching a lot of home movies lately as we are converting them to DVD. Oh my goodness, we have some great memories! We've been glued to the t.v. just laughing and of course crying too at some of the more sentimental moments. What a treasure!

Ok, so I'll try my challenge again so keep visiting and hopefully I'll have some more updates for you.

Do It....

"The best piece of advice someone has ever given me was 'do it scared'. And no matter if you’re scared, just go ahead and do it anyway because you might as well do it scared, so it will get done and you will feel so much better if you step out of your comfort zone." - Sherri Shepherd

Trumpet

I know I missed yesterday.

I tried to blog but Blogger was down for awhile.

HomeAudio is living up to his name.

Louder than ever.

He started playing the trumpet.

Enough said!

Mark

This is my little buddy Mark.

He belongs to my brother and his wife and is a fun little fella. HomeAudio was thrilled to have another boy cousin! There were only 3 boy cousins in the midst of 7 girls so adding another boy was very exciting.

It's also exciting that Mark is the one who will carry on my maiden name into the next generation. He is the only Pennington boy (so far?).

During a recent construction project at my parent's house, it was my job to watch this little guy. I have this job occasionally over there which is absolutely fine with me! I love baby duty and would happily watch the baby over any job that includes mud, sand, dirt, extreme heat, cold, or just about anything else.

And who wouldn't be happy watching a work project with this little

adorable

squishy

laidback

boy!

He was content watching his daddy and papa work outside and I was content just watching him. I just love those cheeks!

Day Off??

I thought today was going to be a day off but alas, it is not. It actually is turning out to be a bit overwhelming and I am going from the t.v. to the computer in an attempt to avoid and procrastinate.

Here is my to do list:

~call the insurance company (done)
~call our Flex Plan company (done)
~mop the horrendously sticky floors
~find my kitchen countertops (done)
~finish laundry
~address and mail out 83 letters
~purchase a teacher's gift
~get said gift to teacher TODAY by 3:00
~explain to my son why teacher's gift wasn't there at 1:00 for the teacher's luncheon
~apologize to the teacher for missing her luncheon :(
~remind my husband to NEVER pay medical bills without asking me first so that I don't have to again call our Flex Plan company (done and done again)
~wonder how many dollars the dr.'s offices get paid by people who just pay bills and don't ask questions like my husband (done: I feel bad for people who don't understand medical billing)
~vaccuum floors

And then when all of this is done, or time runs out, whichever comes first, we get to relax and have a fun night with friends!

Alright, here I go....

Dressing Up and Dancing

WeeklyAd has completed her fifth year of dance and still loves every minute of it. We had a little bit of a rough start with ballet this year due to a new (and unfriendly) dance instructor but in the end, it all worked out. Costumes are in, new shoes are purchased, and recital is next week!

It looks like she's ready for the stage!

I have 2 rules when it comes to dance:

1. Ballet is mandatory
2. Absolutely no hip hop

I love ballet because I feel like it has really taught WeeklyAd a lot of things well beyond the studio. In my opinion it has taught her grace, poise, how to carry herself, how to be ladylike, confidence, and more. I also love it's beauty and am excited about the techniques that WeeklyAd is learning as she progresses.

I don't love hip hop. Two of my nieces have taken hip hop and love it and it has been great for them so I don't think hip hop is wrong for everyone. In my opinion, it's wrong for WeeklyAd. And maybe it isn't so much wrong for her now but would be wrong for her down the road and how can I say no later if she does it now and loves it and is good at it? So we choose to avoid hip hop. Trust me, WeeklyAd can shake her booty and be "sassy" enough without any encouragement or choreographed routine.

So with those rules, and her age, WeeklyAd has been taking two classes per year, ballet and then either tap or jazz. I'm excited about next year though because there may be an opportunity for me to work one night a week at the studio (while WeeklyAd is dancing) in exchange for tuition. If that works out then WeeklyAd can add a class and either take ballet, jazz, and tap all together or move into lyrical (which is Management's favorite) or leaps and turns. I'm really praying that it all works out!

She just loves dancing and seems to be quite good at it and it has been such a great outlet (and confidence booster) for my introverted entertainer. She loves the stage! And I love watching her!

And just because I'm a glutton for punishment, here is a picture of me in the 3rd grade all ready for my ice skating show.

oh.my.word!

Scrapbooking

oh my goodness, time passes so fast!

life is just busy. which is really annoying because I've become that person that just 4 years ago I blogged about not becoming. i prided myself on not being busy. well, you know what they say about pride i guess! not only did i fall, i fell hard!

but i want to go back in time. i want to be home after school, eating dinner, playing games, and hanging out together as a family with nowhere to go and nothing to do.

hoping that all comes with summer, i guess.

i'm giving myself a challenge though....to blog everyday this week. i don't want to fall behind on blogging life like i did those scrapbooks that sit unfinished in my living room. i have such guilt over those stinkin' things. i soothe myself by thinking "well at least i'm blogging our lives."

so i must blog.

or scrapbook. (and that's not gonna happen)

so blogging it is.
